More than 250 delegates came together in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador to discuss, debate, and celebrate! I wanted to take a minute to thank you for being there.
It is an honour to be elected as Regional Executive Vice-President, and I want to congratulate the rest of our Atlantic Regional Council directors who were also elected to their positions during the convention.
The Atlantic Regional Council will continue the work of creating a diverse and inclusive union. We will ensure that the resolutions adopted at convention are followed through this cycle to make gains for all workers, and the greater labour movement.
The week leading up to the convention, communities in the Atlantic were impacted by out-of-control wildfires in the region. Many of you pledge to donate to help those who lost homes and were displaced due to the fires. We are proud to say that over $30,500 was pledged to the Red Cross at our convention! The PSAC Social Justice Fund will be matching this donation to the Red Cross. If your local is interested in donating, please go to the Red Cross website to donate. The Government of Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia will be matching all donations until June 29, 2023.
During convention, a progressive regional budget with increased line items for important union work was adopted. You also debated and adopted resolutions on a variety of subjects: resolutions that address systemic racism, that increase equity representation, and that improve training on health and safety, are just a few examples of the great steps forward we are making. You also adopted resolution for the Atlantic region to fund our first ever Atlantic Regional Indigenous People’s Circle (RIPC), which will include a three-day planning meeting to set the mission and vision of this new regional circle.
I am excited for the next three years and cannot wait to get started on the important work of our union! I hope that everyone had a great convention and that you will continue to help the union however you can. Our regional committees are always looking for more volunteers and engaged members!
Without you and your participation we would not have a union, and we would not have a vision for the future of our union! So again, thank you!
In solidarity,
Chris Di Liberatore
Regional Executive Vice-President, Atlantic
