Report of the Director for Newfoundland & Labrador, Bill Walsh, November 2011 – January 2012

Since being elected, I have participated in many events concerning PSAC members, and more specifically, the members in the Newfoundland and Labrador region.

On November 23, I attended the meeting on steward assemblies offered by the PSAC. It was very informative with some great discussion amongst members from different components. It provided some additional knowledge that will be useful in my role as Provincial Director.

December 8, 2011, the AGMof the Area Council was held and a new executive elected. It provided an opportunity to meet some new members as they came to get involved with the Area Coucil.

On January 26, 2012, there was a rally at the Canadian Coastguard building to protest against the closing of the search and rescue centre. MP Peter Penashue was present on the inside of the building for the cake cutting of the 50th anniversary of the Coastguard. He refused to talk to the protestors and advoided us at all cost. Other issues that were brought to the forefront during the rally were the cuts to EI and other government cuts in general.

On several occasions, I have tried to speak to Mr. Penashue but as of present, was not able to get a response from his office.

Over the last few moths, I have spoke to many of the members and have heard their concerns about what the government is doing to us. I look forward to the Atlantic Council meeting and representing you, the members, to give you a voice in the region.

Respectfully Submitted,

Bill Walsh
