PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
Conservative government continuing shortsighted cuts in St. John’s NL
July 24, 2014
ST. JOHN’S, NL – The department of National Defence served six work force adjustment letters to employees who work at CFS St. John’s in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
‘Again this goes to show, that this department has made another wrongheaded decision. Additionally, we are aware of 5 other positions that were work force adjusted that are now being replaced by contractors. This demonstrates that the work does not go away and that there are no proven cost savings for the taxpayers.’ said John MacLennan, National President of the Union of National Defense Employees (UNDE).
‘These cuts have a negative impact on the local economy and they also jeopardize the valuable services these men and women provide on a daily basis. We have to get rid of this government in 2015 in order to protect the essential services our members deliver to the citizens of this country.’ said Jeannie Baldwin, Regional Executive Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).
The Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE) is one of the largest components of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and represents approximately 18,000 public and private sector workers at DND establishments and facilities across Canada.
