Transgender Day of Remembrance

Honouring Lives and Continuing the Fight for Equality

This day is not only about remembrance, but also about reaffirming our collective responsibility to create workplaces and communities that are free from harassment and hate.

— Sarah Bolger, PSAC Atlantic 2SLGBTQIA+ Director

Each year on November 20, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) — a solemn day to honour and remember the transgender, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals whose lives have been lost to transphobic violence.

What began in 1999 as a vigil in memory of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman murdered in Massachusetts, has since become a global day of reflection and action. TDOR reminds us of the urgent need to confront the discrimination, hate, and systemic barriers that continue to impact transgender and gender-diverse communities.

As the PSAC Atlantic 2SLGBTQIA+ Director, I stand in solidarity with trans and gender-diverse members across our union. PSAC’s ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion means working to ensure all members — regardless of gender identity or expression — can work and live in safety, dignity, and respect.

This day is not only about remembrance, but also about reaffirming our collective responsibility to create workplaces and communities that are free from harassment and hate. Let us take this opportunity to listen, learn, and advocate for policies and protections that uphold trans rights as human rights.

Together, we honour the lives lost and commit to building a more just and inclusive future for all.

In solidarity,

Sarah Bolger
PSAC Atlantic 2SLGBTQIA+ Director
